The Bernie:
SAGE Mental Attitude Award
The Bernie is awarded each year to the student who finds joy and fun in both work and daily life, and who demonstrates a positive attitude, leadership, determination, enthusiasm, and genuine care for others—enhancing the overall experience at SAGE.
The Bernie is named for, and in recognition of, our friend and colleague Bernard (Bernie) Gilpin.
Bernie was one of the original faculty members when the SAGE program began in 1983, and passed away in December 2010 from cancer.
Bernie faced life’s adversities and challenges with a positive attitude and determination and always made life more fun for those around him.
